The Iowa Caucus is Just Around the Corner
With less than 50 days until the first real test for the 2024 presidential election, all eyes are on the Iowa Caucus. At the moment, former President Donald Trump is leading the pack, nationally and in Iowa. According to the RCP Average, Trump has a commanding lead in the Hawkeye State with 47% support. His closest competitor is Ron DeSantis, the Governor of Florida, with 17% support. Trailing behind is Nikki Haley with 14% support. While it’s no surprise that Trump is ahead, the battle for second place between DeSantis and Haley is heating up.
Nikki Haley Takes Aim at DeSantis
Nikki Haley, recognizing the current standings, has set her sights on Ron DeSantis. Her super PAC has spent a staggering $3.6 million against the Florida Governor, compared to only $25,000 against Joe Biden and nothing against Trump. This indicates that Haley sees DeSantis as her main rival and is willing to invest substantial resources to bring him down. However, DeSantis remains unfazed and ready to engage in a debate.
DeSantis’s Critique of Haley’s Positions
DeSantis has not held back in criticizing Haley’s positions, stating that she is out of touch with Republican voters. He points to her establishment-oriented positions, such as her proposal to force everyone to disclose their names on social media, which would likely be used to censor conservatives. DeSantis also highlights Haley’s stance on immigration, believing that immigration policy should prioritize the best interests of the American people and workers, rather than letting CEOs determine it. Additionally, he accuses Haley of siding with corporations, such as Disney, over the state of Florida and its children.
DeSantis’s Approach to Immigration and Border Security
When it comes to immigration and border security, DeSantis takes a tough stance. He emphasizes that there must be consequences for illegal border crossings, declaring it a national emergency on his first day as president. He plans to deploy troops to the border, end asylum fraud, and implement the Remain in Mexico policy. In addition, DeSantis proposes charging fees on foreign remittances to fund the construction of the border wall. He firmly believes in deporting those who are in the country illegally and taking steps to prevent future illegal immigration to protect vulnerable women and children.
The Need for Action Against Mexican Drug Cartels
DeSantis recognizes that the surge in sex trafficking and human trafficking is largely due to the control of Mexican drug cartels. As president, he would categorize them as a foreign terrorist organization, authorizing the use of military force against them. DeSantis highlights that they are evading the country and committing serious crimes, including trafficking the deadly drug fentanyl, which has devastating effects on communities across the nation. He has met numerous “Angel Moms” who have lost their children to drug overdoses and is determined to put an end to this crisis.
Responding to Allegations Regarding Vander Plaats’s Endorsement
DeSantis recently received an endorsement from Bob Vander Plaats, a prominent faith leader in Iowa. However, there have been questions raised about the money Vander Plaats received from groups linked to DeSantis’s campaign. DeSantis clarifies that the PAC, which he does not control, paid for advertising to support his candidacy. He reaffirms that Vander Plaats’s endorsement is not for sale and that the allegations are baseless. DeSantis believes that endorsements should not be seen as suspicious and that people can have genuine support for a candidate.
Dealing with Big Donors and Wall Street Influence
DeSantis addresses the shift in big donors turning to Nikki Haley, stating that he is not concerned about his own campaign finances. He attributes the shift to his consistent track record of doing what he believes is right, regardless of donor interests. DeSantis has taken on powerful entities like Disney, big pharma, and the sugar industry in Florida, and he plans to continue doing so without twisting his principles for donations. He believes that adopting the platform of Wall Street and big donors is not a winning strategy for Republicans nationwide.
The Need for Strong Leadership in the Republican Party
When asked about the fundraising challenges faced by the Republican National Committee (RNC), DeSantis expresses confidence that as the nominee, he can turn things around, just as he did in Florida. He transformed Florida from a swing state with a Democratic majority to a solidly Republican state. DeSantis believes that strong leadership and a clear vision are key to inspiring people to support the party’s efforts. While he acknowledges the need for change at the RNC after recent election losses, he is determined to lead the charge and ensure fundraising success.
