The Objectives of Israel: Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett Speaks Out

In a recent interview, former Prime Minister of Israel Naftali Bennett shared his objectives for the ongoing conflict in the region. He emphasized two main goals: eradicating Hamas and releasing the hostages. Bennett expressed his support for extending the ceasefire but also acknowledged the tension between these two objectives.

The Goal to Eradicate Hamas

Bennett firmly believes that Hamas must be eliminated due to their past actions and their continued threats to Israeli citizens. He stated, “We cannot continue with this entity existing.” According to him, Hamas has repeatedly targeted Israeli children, parents, and families, and their existence cannot be tolerated.

The Objective to Release Hostages

While Bennett recognizes the importance of eradicating Hamas, he also acknowledges the need to secure the release of hostages. Currently, there is an interim deal in place that allows for the release of approximately 10 to 12 hostages per day. However, Bennett emphasizes that this deal comes with a price, as it prolongs the existence of Hamas.

He explained, “Once this interim deal is over, the idea will go full force to eradicate Hamas.” Bennett’s ultimate goal is to eliminate Hamas completely, but he understands the complexity of the situation and the need to prioritize the release of hostages at this time.

Concerns about Extending the Ceasefire

When asked about the possibility of extending the ceasefire, Bennett stated that there is a specific arrangement in place. If Israel receives 10 to 12 hostages per day, they are willing to continue with the ceasefire. However, this arrangement is only valid for up to 10 days, after which Israel will resume fighting.

Although the pause in fighting may affect Israel’s momentum to some extent, Bennett assures that the resolve to defeat Hamas remains strong among the people of Israel. He has met with soldiers, commanders, and citizens who are determined to achieve victory.

The Success of the Ground Campaign

Bennett praised the success of the ground campaign prior to the ceasefire. He described it as a “very successful” campaign that involved massive force against Hamas and the terrorists in Gaza. The IDF’s performance was deemed effective, leading Hamas to seek a deal.

However, Bennett emphasized that the campaign is not yet over. Israel has taken control of the northern side of Gaza, but there is still a need to address the situation in the southern side. The focus will now be on defeating Hamas completely.

Israeli-Palestinian Conflict and International Reactions

While there is generally strong support for Israel from American elected officials, Bennett acknowledged that there has been some criticism. Senator Chris Murphy from Connecticut, for instance, expressed his belief that Israel should recognize the Palestinian desire for statehood.

In response, Bennett reminded viewers that Gaza was given the opportunity for statehood in 2005 when Israel withdrew and handed over the entire land to the Palestinian Authority. However, instead of building a prosperous state, Hamas turned it into a terrorist stronghold.

Bennett also highlighted the unfortunate reality of Hamas enjoying significant support from the public in Gaza. He mentioned the participation of civilians in acts of violence and the immense challenges posed by such circumstances.

Lastly, Bennett expressed his gratitude for the release of the prisoners and addressed preliminary reports of their poor health. He reiterated Israel’s commitment to the well-being of these individuals.
