Hunter Biden has expressed his desire to testify publicly on his own behalf and his father’s behalf in the impeachment ceremony. However, the GOP has rejected this proposal, and even the White House is not pleased. According to a former aid who spoke to Politico, they are “irritated” by the proposal, and this has led to Abbe Lowell and the attorneys becoming more aggressive, as they are not clear about the tactics and strategy being employed.
In reaction to Hunter Biden’s request to testify publicly, former Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker explains that the Republicans are justified in their skepticism. Abbe Lowell is a highly skilled insider in Washington, D.C. who knows how to navigate the political game. The key reason why Republicans are reluctant to agree to this proposal is because they do not want Hunter Biden to undergo hours of deposition testimony, where the majority’s counsel can ask questions and follow a line of reasoning without the back-and-forth exchange that a public hearing would provide. On the other hand, Hunter’s team wants the Democrats on the committee to assist him in answering questions, running interference, and making it difficult for the Republicans to scrutinize his responses. While this tactic may seem transparent, it actually serves to hide the truth from the American people, as opposed to allowing the entire story to come out during these depositions. Whitaker also points out that Donald Trump Jr. submitted to two depositions during the last Congress, demonstrating that this is a well-known method of obtaining information from witnesses.
James Comer, the House Oversight Chairman, believes that conducting a deposition is a credible way to conduct investigations. He states that Hunter Biden is not above the law and that they would be willing to have a public hearing with him after the deposition to go over the extensive bank records and documents they possess, which contain countless questions about specific transactions.
Regarding the tactic of blaming Hunter Biden, it seems that Democrats are attempting to protect Joe Biden by suggesting that Hunter is the problem. However, it is important to note that there have been numerous transactions, loans, and LLCs involved, and the Biden family, including Hunter, James, and others, have greatly benefited from this multi-year scheme. Therefore, the focus should remain on asking Hunter, who was at the center of this entire money scheme, about the details of these transactions, now that all the necessary documents are available.
It is also worth considering whether Hunter can be viewed as a sympathetic figure due to his struggles with drug addiction and the loss of his brother. This sudden shift in sentiment could be an attempt to portray Republicans as bullies rather than investigators.
