The Firing of Frank Reich
Just eight days ago, Jake Blazer of Fox Sports mentioned that Frank Reich, head coach of the Carolina Panthers, occupied the hottest seat in the NFL. However, things took an unexpected turn when Reich was fired during his first season with the team. This marks the third consecutive year that a coach has been fired in their inaugural season. First, it was Urban Meyer of the Jaguars, then Nathaniel Hackett of the Broncos, and now Frank Reich.
David Tepper’s Involvement
David Tepper, the owner of the Panthers, has been heavily involved with the team. Despite his success in another industry, Tepper’s belief that success on the football field can be achieved simply by wanting it and working hard is flawed. Competition in the NFL is fierce, and other owners who have made billions elsewhere share the same aspirations. Tepper needs to hire competent individuals, trust them to do their job, and avoid interfering with their decision-making process.
The Consequences and Challenges Ahead
The firing of Frank Reich, combined with Tepper’s overinvolvement, creates challenges for the Panthers moving forward. It raises questions about who would be willing to take the head coaching position under Tepper’s ownership. With a history of firing coaches prematurely, including Matt Rule and Ron Rivera, the job may not be attractive unless Tepper is willing to overpay. Additionally, with the recent acquisition of Bryce Young as the first overall pick in the draft, finding a coach who aligns with Young’s potential may prove difficult.
The Need for Change
Panthers fans are unfortunately stuck with an owner who fails to understand the dynamics of successful football operations. Tepper’s impatience and desire to make a difference hinder the team’s progress. The Panthers will continue to struggle until Tepper learns to trust his football personnel and relinquish control.
