In the latest incident of escalating attacks, Houthi rebels have targeted the U.S.S. Mason after the ship responded to a distress call from an Israeli-linked ship. This marks at least 73 attacks on U.S. forces since October 17th. Former Defense Secretary Mark Esper will be joining us to discuss whether the U.S. needs to take stronger action against Iranian proxies.
Houthi Rebels Fire Upon U.S.S. Mason
After rescuing an Israeli tanker from five armed hijackers, the U.S.S. Mason tracked two missiles fired by Houthi forces in Yemen. Fortunately, both missiles fell short into the Gulf of Aden. This is seen as a significant escalation by Houthi threats, according to multiple Navy sources.
In 2016, the same Navy warship, U.S.S. Mason, found itself in a similar situation off the coast of Yemen. It took the unusual step of firing an SM2 missile to defend itself and the U.S.S. Ponce against Houthi cruise missiles. This marked the first time the SM2 missile was used by a warship in combat.
Rescue Operation and Arrest of Hijackers
On Sunday, Navy personnel on board the U.S.S. Mason responded to a distress call from an Israeli tanker named Central Park. Five armed gunmen had seized the tanker by pulling up alongside it. The tanker’s low free board made it easy for the hijackers to gain access.
The crew of the tanker locked themselves in the citadel safe room for protection. The gunmen attempted to break down the door but were unsuccessful. They then exited the ship and made their way back to the shores of Yemen. However, they were pursued and eventually arrested.
During the pursuit, warning shots were fired by the U.S. Navy personnel, and a U.S. helicopter gunship provided cover. The hijackers are now held on the U.S.S. Mason and are being questioned by counter-piracy authorities. A Japanese ship also assisted with the interception of the hijackers.
Questions Raised on U.S. Response
The incident raises new questions about why the U.S. has not responded to the escalating threats from Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. With the increasing number of attacks on U.S. forces, there is growing concern about the need for stronger action against the Iranian proxies.
