Respiratory Illness: What You Need to Know

The Situation in China

Recent footage from hospitals in China has shown an alarming influx of patients with respiratory illnesses. The Chinese health ministry claims that this is not a new virus, but rather a combination of the flu and other factors. However, given the track record of China and the World Health Organization (WHO), it is difficult to trust their statements.

The Immune Pause Phenomenon

Dr. Marc Siegel, a medical contributor for Fox News, believes that what China is currently experiencing is similar to what the United States went through last year, known as the “immune pause.” After a period of lockdowns, once restrictions are lifted, upper respiratory viruses, such as RSV and COVID, tend to resurface.

Another factor to consider is a bacteria called microplasma. The Journal of Nature recently published an article discussing the effects of flooding this bacteria with a Z Pack antibiotic. Overuse of antibiotics can lead to the development of resistant strains of microplasma, which can result in hospitalization.

Increasing Illnesses in the United States

In the United States, there has been a noticeable increase in sick visits to hospitals and clinics, particularly for respiratory issues. This includes symptoms like laryngitis and tracheitis. While these illnesses may occur annually, there is a sense that the current situation is more severe.

If you are experiencing a raspy throat or other respiratory symptoms, it is important to get tested for strep throat. Strep is treatable with antibiotics, unlike microplasma. Additionally, individuals over the age of 60 or 65 should consider getting a pneumonia shot, as well as the flu vaccine and RSV shot.

Ultimately, it is crucial to consult with your doctor to make informed decisions about your health and to ensure appropriate treatment.
